The new auditorium of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen is located on Geschwister-Scholl-Platz (formerly Wilhelmstrasse 7–9). The rear of the building is also adjacent to Hölderlinstrasse and the sides on Silcherstrasse and Gmelinstrasse. The building is accessible from both Wilhelmstrasse and Hölderlinstrasse.

history

The New Aula was built between 1841 and 1846 according to plans by Gottlob Georg Barth (1777–1848). The client was the University of Tübingen , which at the time needed a new university center with various lecture halls and a large festival hall. The inauguration took place in 1845, although the building was not yet completely finished. Between 1928 and 1932, the north-western part was added with extensive reconstruction of the interior. Today the law faculty of the University of Tübingen is housed in the New Aula. The auditorium maximum , the ballroom and the large and small senate are located on the first floor .

description

New auditorium at the blue hour

The New Aula is a three-storey, classicist three- wing grand building that is open to the rear of Hölderlinstrasse. The entire structure is made of exposed sandstone blocks, the eaves of copper . The building is covered by a gable roof, the side risalite by hip roofs . The front is completely symmetrical. In front of the main entrance to Wilhelmstrasse there is a mosaic on a small paved square , which shows the palm from the Tübingen university coat of arms. To the right and left of it are two small bronze fountains .

The three-storey structure of the building is emphasized by the cornice on the facade . Like the two side projections, the central projection is offset about one meter forward. It is covered by a gable roof. The main portal is located on a stereobat about five steps high . This elevation continues on the rest of the building through a base , which ends with a base cornice on the entire facade. The main portal on Wilhelmstrasse consists of three doors, the double-wing central door and two single-wing side doors. There is a balcony above the main entrance. This is supported by four fluted columns with Doric capitals .

The windows on the first and second floors, located above the main entrance, are much wider and higher than the others and divided into three parts by four pilasters with Ionic capitals on the first and four pilasters with Corinthian capitals on the second floor. This is a superposition . There is a slightly protruding crossbar above the side windows. Above the second floor sits the architrave on which the University of Tübingen's motto Attempto! Is written in golden capital letters between the dates 1477 and 1932 . (Latin: I dare!) Is to be read. Above it is a simple frontispiece (gable triangle). In the middle of the tympanum is a classic clock with Roman numerals . The entablature is adorned with a central acroter and two corner acroters.

The first floor is the bel étage or the piano nobile, while the upper floor forms the attic floor or a mezzanine floor with a lower height and thus also smaller windows. The middle parts, which are slightly set back, have five window axes. Here, too, the floors are separated from one another by cornices . Over the windows, colored stones are used to indicate overlapping arches ( horizontal arches ), as is the case with the side elevations, although there are only three window axes. The corners of the side and central projections are bordered by pilasters. A frieze decorated with foliage forms the transition from the second floor to the eaves.
