Gottlob Georg Barth , from 1834 von Barth , (born June 21, 1777 in Stuttgart ; † January 2, 1848 there ) was a German architect and Württemberg court architect .

Life

Gottlob Georg Barth was the son of Johann Jakob Barth, bricklayer and stone mason at the Württemberg ducal court, and was accepted into the Hohen Karlsschule in 1786 . From 1799 to 1800 Barth attended the Berlin Building Academy and then worked in a studio in Paris from 1801 to 1802 . In 1803 he came into contact with Bertel Thorvaldsen in Rome . One year after his return to Stuttgart, Barth entered the civil service as court building controller in 1806 and participated in the expansion of the New Palace in Stuttgart. Further stations in his career were in 1811 the appointment as court architect and in 1818 as senior building officer in the Royal Württemberg Department of Finance. In this role he set up the Royal State Archives and the Royal Natural History Cabinet from 1821 to 1827.

His most important buildings are the late Classicist old building of the State Gallery in Stuttgart (dating from 1838 to 1842) and the New Aula of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He also designed the foyer for the spa facilities in Bad Boll (1823–1825) and the plans for the expansion of Schwaigern Castle, which were largely only implemented after his death . Together with Ludwig Abel, he also planned the Church of St. Alban in Kirchhausen .

In 1834 Gottlob Georg Barth was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown . Associated with this was the elevation to the personal nobility.

His son Albert Barth (1814–1885) has also appeared as an architect of important buildings.
