Alfred Lutz (graphic designer)

Alfred Lutz (born November 21, 1919 in Villingen in the Black Forest ; † August 4, 2013 Schwäbisch Gmünd ) was a German graphic designer and university professor .

Life

Lutz studied commercial graphics in Berlin from 1936 to 1939 before he was drafted into military service at the end of August 1939 . In 1940 he took part in the invasion of Norway as a scout in a cavalry unit and was promoted to sergeant in 1941. After attending the cavalry school in Bromberg, he was first transferred to Finland as a lieutenant and in November 1944 to northern Norway. Later he was taken prisoner by the French . In 1947 he was released from captivity and came to Schwäbisch Gmünd. There he began to work as a freelance commercial artist before expanding his field of activity to the print sector in collaboration with BASF .

After Lutz had been teaching at the university from 1955, he was appointed to the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Design in 1970 . There he received a professorship and built up the graphic design / visual communication department . From 1979 until his retirement in 1984 he was the university's prorector . After his retirement, he continued teaching until 1991.

In 1987 Lutz took over the management of the Steinbeis Transfer Center for Media Design , and he was also a board member and chairman of the Gmünder Kunstverein .

After his death in 2013, Lutz was buried in the Gmünder Leonhard Cemetery, accompanied by a large mourning community .

  • 1950: 1st prize for the Federal Republic of Germany in the international poster competition with the poster "Inter-European cooperation"
  • 2004: Münster Medal , by the Münsterbauverein Schwäbisch Gmünd
  • 2009: Citizen's Medal of the City of Schwäbisch Gmünd
  • 2009: Solo exhibition "Moments" on the occasion of Alfred Lutz's 90th birthday at the Gmünder Kunstverein .
