The Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Stuttgart (English: Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University ) is one of the locations of the Dual University of Baden-Wuerttemberg , which offers a dual, practice integrating studies. Study operations began on October 1, 1974. In contrast to universities or technical colleges , each student has a training contract with one of the roughly 2,500 dual partner companies / institutions. With around 8,000 students, it is one of the largest universities in the Stuttgart and Upper Neckar regions. More than 40 recognized bachelor's degree programs are currently offered. The DHBW Stuttgart with its Horb campus is the largest of nine locations of the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University.

history

At the beginning of the 1970s, the companies Daimler-Benz , Bosch and SEL - today Nokia - initiated the so-called “Stuttgart Model” as a forerunner of the later vocational academies. The aim was to offer the increasing number of high school graduates an alternative to traditional studies. In addition, there was a lack of well-trained junior staff, which they wanted to address with a combination of study and training. The Stuttgart University of Cooperative Education was one of the two founding academies with the Mannheim University of Cooperative Education and began its studies on October 1, 1974. 122 students in 35 training companies comprised the first year, who studied economics and technology . In 1975 the social affairs area was added. The branch in Horb am Neckar was founded in 1989 .

On March 1, 2009, the Stuttgart University of Cooperative Education, like all professional academies in Baden-Württemberg, became the location of the newly founded Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University. In the course of this, the branch in Horb has since been referred to as "Campus Horb". With the appointment as a university, the DHBW Stuttgart now has the opportunity to continue and intensify some of the previous research under the umbrella of newly created research institutions. The DHBW Stuttgart now has research assignments to fulfill.

Admission and degrees

The prerequisite for admission to a dual course of study at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart is a training contract with a company or a social institution and the general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification . The advanced technical college entrance qualification is sufficient if an additional aptitude test has been passed at the dual university. Under certain conditions, qualified professionals can also be admitted to study at the dual university. The usually strict procedure for selecting applicants is carried out exclusively by the dual partners, i.e. the company or the social institution. Prospective students first apply to a company of their choice and as soon as they receive the training contract there, the prospective students can then enroll at the DHBW Stuttgart. Admission to the course then takes place via the Cooperative State University after submission of the training contract and a certified copy of the school leaving certificate.

The graduates of a dual study program at the DHBW receive an academic degree as a degree:

Faculty of Business

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) or
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) - Business Informatics, Applied Midwifery Studies

Faculty of Technology

  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) Or
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) - Applied Computer Science

Faculty of Social Sciences

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)

All courses at the DHBW are nationally (by the Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency ZEvA) and internationally (by the Open University Validation Services) accredited and rated as intensive courses with 210 ECTS points.

Teaching and research centers

At the DHBW Stuttgart (assigned to the Faculty of Business) there are four teaching and research centers that are combined under the umbrella of the Center of Applied Sciences (CASE). The aim of the Center for Management Simulation (ZMS) is to expand and improve the range of simulation games offered by the university. The ZMS is also the initiator of the German Business Game Award, an award for final degree theses and dissertations / habilitations on the topic of business games . The center is also the organizer of the annual European business game forum , currently part of the Zukunft Personal personnel fair . The simulation game forum is one of the large manufacturer-independent conferences on the topic of simulation games. The Center for Empirical Research (ZEF) is dedicated to the implementation of empirical research projects as well as application-oriented courses and projects within the framework of the curriculum. Both centers are currently financed from tuition fees and serve to improve study conditions. The Center for Intelligent Use of Information Technology (ZINI) works out how which information technology can best be used in a business context. The basis of the activities are cooperative research projects with the dual partners and other companies. The Center for Media Management (ZMM) carries out national and international media projects, conducts cooperative media research and acts as a teaching center for the training of students and employees.

Locations and branch offices

The Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Stuttgart has several locations, all of which are located in downtown Stuttgart. In the Herdweg area there are predominantly courses from the business and engineering faculties. Further parts of the Faculty of Business and the General Student Advisory Service, the International Office and other service facilities can also be found at Rotebühlplatz and Paulinenstraße. Most of the technical courses as well as the rectorate, administration and other central facilities are located in Jägerstrasse and Kronenstrasse. The Business Administration and Commerce course is located on Theodor-Heuss-Straße. The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Business Administration-International Business course are located in Rotebühlstrasse. In July 2017 the foundation stone for the new building of the technical faculty was laid. From the completion of the construction in 2019, all areas of the faculty will be brought together in a single building with 14,000 square meters of usable space in Hegelstrasse. A new building for the Faculty of Business is to be built on a neighboring site.

The campus in Horb am Neckar only offers technical courses that are attended by around 1000 students. Plans to set up another lecture location at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart in Backnang were rejected in 2011.

In addition, the study academy of the VWA (Württemberg Administration and Business Academy) is affiliated to the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Stuttgart.

Formula Student

The Formula Student is an international design competition in which student teams compete against each other with single-seat racing vehicles developed by themselves. The team with the best overall package of racing car performance, engineering and marketing strategy wins the various Formula Student events around the world.

Affiliated to the university, DHBW Engineering eV, a hundred-member association, has been developing a vehicle every year since 2008 to compete in Formula Student Germany and other events in Europe and Asia. The vehicles from the "eSleek" family have been fully electrified since 2011 and with a power to weight ratio of approx. 1.5 kg / PS are also powerful enough to be in the absolute TOP 10 of the world rankings.

In the interdisciplinary teams of aerodynamics, battery, chassis, eDrive, vehicle dynamics, chassis, system electronics and organization, the students from all faculties combine experience and specialist knowledge in the field of high-voltage technology, composite materials, simulation technology and control technology, thereby helping to interlink theory and practice to be more effective.

Since the 2019/20 season, work has been carried out on a "Driverless" eSleek, an electrically powered, autonomous racing car.
