The Black Forest Central / North Nature Park is characterized by the unique beauty and diversity of the landscape: deeply indented valleys, rocks, rushing streams, animals in the landscape, on meadows and pastures form the Black Forest.

Geology and climate, but also the centuries of human use, have created the Black Forest landscape. It is shaped by the change between natural landscape and rural cultural landscape. The Black Forest is named after extensive, natural, dark mixed forests with the characteristic silver fir . Particularly valuable habitats, with a large number of endangered animal and plant species, also determine the landscape of the nature park:

  • Bogs and bog forests
  • Karseen  - the dark eyes of the Black Forest
  • Grinden  - forest-free heather areas on the mountain tops that have been created through grazing for centuries

Among other things, the very special climate of the Black Forest is responsible for the diversity of habitats. While it is almost Mediterranean in the vineyards of the foothills, you feel almost as if you were in Scandinavia in the high areas, such as the Hornisgrinde. There, however, compensate, with appropriate weather conditions, fantastic views of the Rhine plain.

But also its excellent hotels and restaurants and a multitude of cultural sights make the Black Forest Middle / North one of the most popular holiday regions in Germany. In addition, wellness in world-famous spas, culture and an abundance of sports tourism offers from hiking to mountain biking to winter sports invite you to relax.

Preserving all of this is the task of the nature park. At the same time, it shows ways to a sustainable future for the region.

The goals of the nature park and their implementation

In detail, the nature park has set itself the following goals:

  • Preservation of the beauty, character and diversity of the landscape
  • Conservation of the flora and fauna
  • Further development of the potential for recreation and tourism
  • Promotion of traditional rural agriculture
  • Ensuring the maintenance of the open landscape

The Black Forest Central / North Nature Park does not see itself as the guardian of a “museum nature” or even as a “prevention instrument”. Rather, he wants to pave the way to a sustainable future by promoting the development of the region as an attractive place to live, relax, nature and economic.

In addition, the nature park supports projects in the field of sustainable tourism, regional marketing, preservation of the cultural landscape and nature conservation as well as environmental education. These include:

  • Uniform signposting of the hiking trails throughout the Black Forest
  • New designation and uniform signposting of over 1,600 km of Nordic walking routes in 33 communities
  • New designation and uniform signposting of a mountain bike network (over 4000 km) with maps of the individual regions and free GPS download in the nature park's internet adventure portal
  • " Black Forest Guides ", specially trained landscape guides from the region who offer individual adventure tours
  • Support for rural agriculture to preserve the Black Forest landscape. This is done as part of a regional marketing campaign that includes the nature park farmers' markets, nature park hosts and nature park enjoyment fairs
  • Concept of the nature park schools, in which teaching modules on “modern local history” are offered. Outside of the classroom, the schoolchildren learn from external partners (e.g. farmers, craftsmen, fruit and horticultural associations) how products are made in the Black Forest or how nature can be protected.

Project funding

The nature park promotes projects in the areas of sustainable and nature-friendly tourism, public relations, preservation of the natural and cultural heritage in public spaces and the marketing of regional products. Depending on the project, up to 70% of the costs can be subsidized. The applicant bears the remaining costs. The funds come from the " Glücksspirale " lottery , the European Union and the state of Baden-Württemberg. Associations, municipalities and private individuals who are in the natural park setting can apply for funding.

Black Forest guides

Black Forest guides are specially trained nature and landscape guides in the Black Forest Central / North Nature Park. They offer individual adventure tours for locals and guests all year round. There are now around 100 such guides in the nature park.

Nature Park Eyes

The Naturpark-AugenBlicke are lookout points in the nature park that are integrated into a circular route. A nature park eye view includes a bench, a small table and a labeled panorama board.

Nature park hosts

The Naturpark-Wirte are an association of restaurateurs from the Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte / Nord who have dedicated themselves to regional cuisine. “Taste the Black Forest” is their motto.

The nature park hosts offer at least six regional dishes and a regional menu on their menu all year round. Regional means that the main ingredients for the dishes must come from the two nature parks in the Black Forest (Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte / Nord and Naturpark Südschwarzwald ).

A nature park host must meet a number of quality criteria. These are among others:

  • Naturpark-Wirt sees the trend towards regionality and is convinced of the quality of regional products.
  • The main ingredients of a nature park dish must come from the nature park.
  • The NP dishes are to be labeled as “regional dishes from the nature park”. In these dishes, no goods may be used that contradict the philosophy of the nature park (e.g. strawberries in winter).
  • The origin of the products can be traced on the menu.
