history

From 2009 to 2011 a suitability test, a feasibility study and a management plan were drawn up by the Schaffhausen agglomeration association, ZHAW and bioforum. The contribution of new project ideas by actors from the region is ongoing.

In March 2012, municipalities and organizations founded a sponsorship (Association Regional Nature Park Schaffhausen). The management plan was then consulted by the sponsorship. Approval took place in autumn of the same year.

On October 4, 2012, the two German municipalities Jestetten and Lottstetten joined the association and turned the project into a cross-border nature park. In Jestetten, the cooperation agreement was signed by the state minister Alexander Bonde for the state of Baden-Württemberg and the government councilor Reto Dubach for the canton of Schaffhausen.

The management plan was submitted to the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) in January 2013 . In August 2013, the Regional Nature Park Schaffhausen received the status of "Candidate Regional Nature Park" from the FOEN and was recognized by the federal government. This was the starting signal for the four-year construction phase from January 2014.

Until December 2016, the municipal assemblies of the park communities had to coordinate the operating concept and the start of the operating phase. The municipality of Merishausen has decided to leave the regional nature park. Since the community of Bargen was cut off from the other park communities, it has also been removed from the Schaffhausen Regional Nature Park.

With the approval of the application and the award of the label “Park of National Importance” by the Federal Office for the Environment in August 2017, the Schaffhausen Regional Nature Park can start the ten-year operating phase in January 2018.

On November 17, 2019, the electorate of the canton of Schaffhausen approved the “Law on parks of national importance in the canton of Schaffhausen (Cantonal Park Act)”. This is about the canton's financial participation in the nature park. From 2020 the canton will contribute around 300,000 francs until 2027. The money will flow into projects in the areas of nature and cultural landscape, regional small businesses, tourism and agricultural products. Appropriate participation by the canton is a prerequisite for the federal government to support the park financially.

Part of the rural Buchthalens

In April 2020 it became known that the federal government had approved the adaptation of the nature park perimeter of the city of Schaffhausen. The rural areas of Schaffhausen-Buchthalen and the Herblingertal are also new to the nature park . This means that all urban farmers can benefit from the support of the nature park. Thanks to the inclusion of the Herblinger Valley, the local companies GVS Weinkellerei and Falken Brewery can also produce special nature park park products. The expansion is particularly important for the promotion of species in agriculture, the preservation of the orchards around Buchthalen, the oak and forest edge promotion and the preservation of the population of the little glow worm in the Buchthaler forest . The Upper Rhine in the section Rheinhalde to the German border near the Büsingen enclave will also be part of the nature park, which means that the touristic and busy cycle route from Lake Constance to the Rhine Falls ( Rhine route ) will also be in the park. In addition, the perimeter at the Lahnbuck at the entrance to Eschheimertal was slightly corrected so that the entire agricultural zone is in the park area.
