Gündlingen is a village north of the Markgräflerland in Baden-Württemberg . Gündlingen was independent until it was incorporated into the city of Breisach am Rhein on April 1, 1972 . 1,748 inhabitants live on the 11.15 km² of the Gündlingen district (as of June 1, 2014).

Gündlingen is located south of the Kaiserstuhl , about three kilometers from the Rhine , which forms the border with France.

history

In 854 Gündlingen was first mentioned as Cundininga in a deed of ownership from the St. Gallen monastery . Ministerials of the Dukes of Zähringen have been handed down in Gündlingen for the 11th century. In 1297 rule was transferred from the Margraves of Baden to the Order of St. John . Gündlingen remained in the possession of the Johanniterkommende Heitersheim until 1806 and was then part of the Grand Duchy of Baden .

Born in the place

  • Johann Georg Binz (1748–1824), Viennese bookseller, publisher and antiquarian; Binz valued Mozart's estate, among other things. Binz is a great-grandfather of the Viennese actress Katharina Schratt , the mistress of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
  • Alois Häfele (1893–1966), police chief, SS member, security guard in the Chełmno extermination camp (Kulmhof) in Poland; Häfele was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in at least 93,000 cases in the so-called Bonn trial in 1965 for aiding and abetting murder, but died at home in Karlsruhe in 1966 before commencing imprisonment.
