Brandon Maxwell (born March 22, 1991 in Winter Park , Florida ) is an American - Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven from the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) since May 2020 .
Career
Youth and college
Brandon Maxwell was born in Winter Park, Florida, but grew up in Canada's Ontario at the home of his father. There he played in his youth for the Cambridge Hawks , among others , before he joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP) for the 2007/08 season, the central talent factory of the USA Hockey Association . With the junior selection of the NTDP, the goalkeeper took part in the game operations of the North American Hockey League , the second highest junior league in the country, before he was selected in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft at 154th position by the Colorado Avalanche .
For the 2009/10 season Maxwell returned to Canada and played there at the highest junior level for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He served as first goalkeeper with the Rangers for two years before being transferred to the Sarnia Sting in June 2011 . In Sarnia, on the other hand, the goalkeeper was only active for barely half a season until he was transferred to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors in January 2012 and spent the remainder of his last OHL season there. With the end of his junior years, he received no professional contract in North American ice hockey, so he ran for about three months for the University of Guelph in Canadian university sports.
Professional area
A little later, Maxwell decided to move to Europe and signed his first professional contract with HK Berkut from the Ukrainian professional hockey league . After only three appearances there, he moved to Rögle BK in the Allsvenskan , the second highest Swedish league, for the 2014/15 season and was promptly set as the first goalkeeper. He then returned to North America and joined the Utah Grizzlies from the third-rate ECHL , but this engagement ended after a few weeks and a completed game when Maxwell moved to HC Vítkovice Steel in the Czech extra league. In the Extraliga he established himself as a result, so he joined HC Pardubice for the new season and acted there as the first goalkeeper for a year and a half. In January 2017 he moved within the league to BK Mladá Boleslav and has been there regularly since then. After a year at Mountfield HK , the goalkeeper was under contract with EC VSV from August 2019 . On the 43rd matchday against HC Innsbruck , Maxwell scored a goal in the 58th minute, as the fifth goalie in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga .
In May 2020 the Fischtown Pinguins signed Bremerhaven Maxwell, who signed a contract for three years.
International
Maxwell holds dual citizenship and decided to accrue internationally for the United States. As part of the NTDP, he represented the USA at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2008 and the U18 World Championship in 2008 and won a silver and a bronze medal with the team. He made his debut for the senior national team at the Deutschland Cup 2017 and came up with two missions. He was then appointed to the Team USA squad for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games , in which he forms the goalkeeper trio together with Ryan Zapolski and David Leggio . Maxwell benefited from the decision of the National Hockey League not to interrupt the season for these Olympics and thus to ban their players from participating. Finally, the US selection reached seventh place in Pyeongchang, but Maxwell was not used.
