David Leggio (born July 31, 1984 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Grizzlys Wolfsburg from the German Ice Hockey League .

Career

David Leggio began his career as a ice hockey player in the youth team Capital District Selects, for which he was on the ice from 2002 to 2004 in the Eastern Junior Hockey League. In both seasons he was elected to the first all-star team in the league. He then attended Clarkson University for four years and played at the same time for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . The goalkeeper's greatest achievement during his time on the Clarkson University team was winning the ECAC Hockey Championship in the 2006/07 season. In the same season he was elected to the league's first all-star team and goalkeeper of the year. He was also his team's Most Valuable Player . A year later he received the ECAC Hockey Knight Club Award for being a role model on and off the ice. Towards the end of the 2007-08 season , he made his professional ice hockey debut for the Binghamton Senators . In his only season appearance in the American Hockey League , he allowed two goals in nine shots in 30 minutes.

In the 2008/09 season Leggio was under contract with the Florida Everblades in the ECHL . There he was able to convince with a goal average of 2.26 per game and a catch quota of 91.6 percent in his 39 appearances in the regular season. In the playoffs he also had a good record with an average of 2.45 goals conceded per game. In addition, he came to an employment in the AHL for the Albany River Rats during the season, where he stood between the posts and had to accept seven goals during the entire season. For the 2009/10 season , the American accepted a contract offer from the Finnish club TPS Turku , in which he shared the time in the goal of TPS in the SM-liiga together with the Finn Atte Engren . At the end of the season he was Finnish champion straight away with Turku . With an average of 1.57 goals conceded per game and a catch rate of 94.2 percent in his seven playoff appearances, Leggio played a key role in this success and led TPS to five playoff wins.

For the 2010/11 season Leggio signed a one-year contract in his hometown with the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League , who signed him with a two-way contract for their AHL farm team .

Leggio spent the following years exclusively in the AHL, so with the Rochester Americans , the Hershey Bears and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , and was not used in the NHL. In March 2015, the Arizona Coyotes signed him in exchange for Mark Louis , but also gave him to their AHL farm team; these are again the Portland Pirates, for whom Leggio already played in the 2010/11 season, but at that time still as the farm team of the Buffalo Sabers. After the season, his contract was not extended, so he took part in the preparation of the Winnipeg Jets for the season in the summer of 2015 as part of a trial contract ( try-out ) , but did not receive a fixed contract for the 2015/16 season. In October 2015, Leggio decided again to become involved in Europe and joined the EHC Red Bull Munich from the German Ice Hockey League . With Munich he became German champions in 2016, 2017 and 2018 , and in 2016 as regular goalkeeper in the playoffs.

In September 2018, Leggio was signed by the Grizzlys Wolfsburg to replace the injured Felix Brückmann , but did not receive a new contract at the end of the season.

International

For the 2010 World Cup in Germany , Leggio was appointed to the US national ice hockey team for the first time . In the course of the tournament he was the third goalkeeper behind Ben Bishop and Scott Clemmensen , both of whom had previously played in the National Hockey League , without use. He was once on the ice as part of the 2014 World Cup before joining Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics . There, the American selection took seventh place, but Leggio was again not used.

Others

Leggio made a rule change during the 2017/18 DEL season : on December 8, 2017, he simply turned around in a game against Bremerhaven and moved the goal to end a two-on-zero situation; he saw a greater chance of defense against a penalty than with this counterattack. In fact, he also held the penalty from Ross Mauermann . The DEL then changed the rule and from now on the opponent will be awarded a technical goal instead of a penalty for such unsportsmanlike conduct, and Leggio was also fined for "grossly unsporting behavior". Leggio had done this before in the AHL .
