Scott Lee Clemmensen (born July 23, 1977 in Des Moines , Iowa ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper who spent most of his playing career with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League . After his career ended in June 2015, he stayed with the franchise as a goalkeeping coach.

Career

Clemmensen before an NHL game in November 2008

The 1.91 m tall goalie played during his junior years with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the United States Hockey League . In the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , Clemmensen was selected as 215th in the eighth round by the New Jersey Devils , but initially spent his college days in the squad of the Boston College team , where he was in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association between the posts. Overall, he won three Hockey East championships with the university team as well as the NCAA state championship once, in which he was instrumental with his achievements and was elected to the all-star team of the tournament.

Already in the 2001/02 season , the American completed his first NHL missions for the Devils, who also used him at the same time on their farm team , the Albany River Rats , in the American Hockey League . In the following years Clemmensen was most of the time in the AHL on the ice and was only used sporadically as the third goalkeeper in the National Hockey League. In 2007 he signed as a result of this a one-year contract with league rivals Toronto Maple Leafs , which also let him play most of the time in the AHL, but with their own farm team Toronto Marlies . With the Marlies Clemmensen reached the play-off final of the AHL Western Conference, which the team lost, however, with 1-4 games against the Chicago Wolves . For the 2008/09 season , the American returned to the New Jersey Devils, in whose NHL squad he was appointed after eight games.

He spent five years with the Florida Panthers from 2009 to 2014 before returning to the New Jersey Devils in July 2014. There he only made three missions in the 2014/15 season, as a result of which he announced his retirement in June 2015 and took over the position of goalkeeping coach for the Devils with immediate effect.

International

Clemmensen took part with the US national team in the 2009 and 2010 World Championships . At the 2009 World Cup he was the third goalkeeper in Team USA behind Robert Esche and Al Montoya . Here Clemmensen remained without commitment. A year later he was called back to the squad and came as a regular goalkeeper to six missions, in which he achieved a catch rate of 94.1 percent and a shutout .
