biography

Robin Lehman studied painting after finishing school. His interests shifted to music at an early age, so that he spent almost ten years in Paris, where he studied composition with Nadia Boulanger . His training in art and music later benefited his documentaries, which received numerous awards. Over a hundred awards from film festivals as diverse as Atlanta, Barcelona, Berlin, Chicago, Krakow, Moscow, San Francisco and Cannes came together in this way, including the Grand prix du cinéma français .

In his first short film Fly Away (1972), which sequentially shows a man's efforts to fly and recapture his model airplane, Lehman used his talent for creative photography by mixing close-up shots with impressive landscape shots.

In his documentary short film See , shown in 1975 , Lehman takes viewers to Sudan , where he filmed sea creatures and affords an astonishing view of life in the ocean. The film was presented at various film festivals and received several awards. Lehman's short documentary film Don't - The Metamorphosis of the Monarch Butterfly , which shows the metamorphosis of a monarch butterfly , won an Oscar at the 47th Academy Awards in 1975 in the category “Best Documentary Short Film” . In the following year he managed to score again in this category. Like Claire Wilbur , who co-produced the film, he was awarded the Oscar for The End of the Game , a film in which he shows African wildlife. In 1977 he was nominated for an Oscar together with Claire Wilbur, this time in the category “Best Short Film” with Nightlife , which was made in the Irish Sea . However, the trophy went to Peter Werner and Andre R. Guttfreund and their short film In the Region of Ice .

The short film Manimals , released in 1978, deals with the possession of exotic animals by city dwellers. The film shows the contradictions that exist between the romantic fantasies of the owners and the actual claims of the animals unable to defend themselves. The film was awarded, among other things, the Grand Prize of the Melbourne Film Festival.
