Miha Verlič (born August 21, 1991 in Maribor ) is a Slovenian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Fischtown Pinguins in the German Ice Hockey League since 2018 . His father Andrej is an official in ice hockey, his brother Jure is an ice hockey goalkeeper .

Career

Miha Verlič learned to play ice hockey in his hometown of Maribor. There he passed through the youth department of the HDK Maribor and was in action for its U20 team from 2005.

After playing increasingly in the club's (semi) professional team from 2007 onwards, he decided to move to the Czech Republic in 2009 . There he was active for HC Slezan Opava , both in the U20 extra league and in the third-class 2nd division .

As a professional player

In 2011 Verlič returned to Slovenia with a trial contract with HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , which was initially extended to the end of the season in September 2011. In order to gain first match practice, he was then loaned for a few games to his home club, which was participating in the Slohokej League at that time .

In the course of the 2011/12 season he earned a regular place at HDD Olimpija and won the Slovenian championship with it in 2012 , after the club had participated in the regular season in the Austrian ice hockey league . Verlič also mastered the leap into this professional league with success - while there were still 6 scorer points in the 2011/12 season, he scored 16 points in the following season. After the main round of the 2013/14 season he was one of the most successful players in the capital city club with 37 scorer points.

In the summer of 2014 he moved within the ÖEHL to the EC Graz 99ers , a year later - together with Matt Kelly - to Villacher SV .

In March 2018, Verlič left the Carinthians and moved to JYP Jyväskylä in the Finnish Liiga , where he ended the season. For the following season he joined the Fischtown Pinguins from the German Ice Hockey League .

International

Miha Verlič was a member of the Slovenian junior national team from the mid-2000s. In 2008 he took part in the U18 World Junior Championship of Division I with the country's U18 selection , with his team being relegated to Division II as last-placed. A year later, in the U18 tournament of Division II , which was held in Verlič's hometown Maribor, he finished second with the U18 selection of his home country and thus missed the direct promotion.

He had other assignments in the youth field at the U20 World Championships in Division I in 2010 and 2011 .

Due to his achievements in the Austrian ice hockey league, he was nominated for the Olympic squad of the Slovenian men's national team for the Olympic Winter Games , although he had not previously played a major tournament for the men's team. After taking a surprising seventh place with the Slovenians at the Winter Games in Sochi , he was also nominated for the 2014 World Cup , in which he and his team were promoted from Division I to the top division, in which he won the 2015 World Cup played. After the direct relegation, he played again in Division I in 2016. At the 2017 World Cup , he again failed to stay in the top division with the Slovenes. That is why he played at the 2018 World Cup , when he achieved the best plus / minus balance and, after Kazakhs Roman Startschenko, the second highest scorer points of the tournament, again in Division I.

In addition, he qualified in the Olympic qualification for the 2018 Games for the Olympic tournament in Pyeongchang , in which he also took part.
