Ryan Craig Matthew Smith (born November 10, 1986 in Archway , London ) is a former English football player . The extremely responsive winger acted mostly in midfield or in the forward line as a winger .

Athletic career

Arsenal FC

As an England youth international, Smith began his career at Arsenal and made his debut for the first team in the third round of the League Cup against Rotherham United on October 28, 2003 at the age of only 16 . Then he was in the same competition in the games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Middlesbrough FC . His missions were limited to the Carling Cup and the reserve team at the beginning of the 2004/05 season. During a game of the "second team" against the reserves from Ipswich Town , Smith then injured his knee so badly that he had to pause well into 2005.

Leicester City & Derby County

On September 30, 2005, Arsenal FC loaned Smith to Leicester City for the full 2005/06 season. There he was able to earn a regular place straight away, which he lost again in the middle of the season. After a total of less than half a year, the club's management of the "Foxes" agreed with Smith that the loan phase should come to an early end. On March 10, 2006, Smith finally returned to Arsenal FC. On August 4, 2006, he then signed a three-year contract with the second division Derby County , where he made his debut two days later in a 2-2 draw against Southampton FC .

Overall, Smith completed a total of 15 league games at the beginning of the 2006/07 season to the end of 2006, but when the promotion candidate signed a number of midfielders in the winter transfer period, the Derby County's management decided on a loan deal.

Millwall FC

On March 21, 2007, the third division Millwall FC agreed to a one-month loan from Ryan Smith, which was extended on April 17, 2007 to a period of three months until the end of the season. Smith showed good performances during this time, so that Willie Donachie as coach of Millwall FC showed a permanent commitment of the winger. In July 2007, Smith finally signed a two-year contract with the "Lions" for a fee of £ 150,000.

Smith was in the first eight league games until the end of September 2007 when he should put him in the 2-1 home defeat to Swindon Town again a serious knee injury for an extended period of time.
