Michael "Mike" Stewart (born May 30, 1972 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Austro - Canadian ice hockey player who played in the Austrian ice hockey league for EC VSV, among others . Most recently he was the trainer of the Kölner Haie .

Career

Stewart played for the Michigan State University when he in the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 in the first round as the 13th player overall by the New York Rangers selected was. However, he never made the leap into the National Hockey League , but played in the American Hockey League for the Binghamton Rangers and Springfield Falcons and in the International Hockey League for the Detroit Vipers . He spent the 1996/97 season with Team Canada .

At the age of 28, the defender finally gave up his NHL dream and moved to Europe. After a season with the Frankfurt Lions in the German Ice Hockey League , he moved to the traditional Carinthian club EC VSV in Austria. Since then he has won the Austrian championship title twice with the VSV . After Herbert Hohenberger left , he became captain of the VSV.

Trainer

In 2010 he ended his active career and became assistant coach at VSV. From February 10, 2011, he was a coach at VSV, succeeding Johan Strömwall , who resigned from the post due to lack of success. In spring 2012 Stewart left the VSV and switched to the following season as a trainer for the Fischtown Pinguins from Bremerhaven in the DEL2 . He crowned his second season on the North Sea coast with the championship title of the 2013/14 DEL2 season .

After Stewart was able to celebrate the runner -up in the 2014/15 DEL2 season , he moved to the DEL for the 2015/16 season as the new head coach of the Augsburg Panthers . He led Augsburg twice in the DEL championship round, in the 2018/19 season the team reached the semi-finals under his leadership. At the end of April 2019, he was hired as the new head coach by DEL competitor Kölner Haie . In February 2020, Mike Stewart was released from his duties as head coach of the Kölner Haie after losing 17 games in a row.

National team

In 2014 and 2016 he was appointed assistant coach to the Canadian team for the Germany Cup.
