Sean Couturier (born December 7, 1992 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is a Canadian ice hockey player with US citizenship. Since 2011, the center has played for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League (NHL), who had selected him in eighth position in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft . With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2015 World Cup .

Career

Sean Couturier played from 2008 to 2011 for the Voltigeurs de Drummondville , who had selected him in the LHJMQ Entry Draft 2008 in second overall position, in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In his first year in the LHJMQ, he and his team won the Coupe du Président . In the following season , the attacker scored 96 points in 68 games, for which he received the Trophée Jean Béliveau , which is awarded annually to the most successful scorer of the LHJMQ. In addition, he was appointed to the Second All-Star team. In the following play-offs, the Voltigeurs were eliminated in the semifinals against eventual champions Moncton Wildcats . Following the regular 2010/11 season , Couturier was awarded the Michel Brière Trophy as the most valuable player in the LHJMQ .

In the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Couturier was selected in the first round in eighth position by the Philadelphia Flyers . Before the start of the 2011/12 season, he received a three-year entry-level contract with the Flyers, who immediately nominated the Canadian-US dual citizen to the NHL squad. In his rookie season , the player was invited to the NHL All-Star Game and took part in the SuperSkills Competition at this event . Overall, Couturier completed 77 games for the Philadelphia Flyers during the regular season this season, achieving 13 goals and 14 assists . In the following play-offs, he scored his first hat trick in the National Hockey League on April 13, 2012 when the Flyers played against the Pittsburgh Penguins .

In the 2017/18 season, Couturier significantly increased his personal statistics to 76 points from 82 games and was also the second best goalscorer of his team (behind Claude Giroux ) with 31 hits . As a result, he was nominated together with Anže Kopitar and Patrice Bergeron for the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive striker of the NHL, which Kopitar eventually won.

International

Sean Couturier represented the Canadian national team for the first time in an international tournament at the 2011 U20 World Youth Championship . The team won the silver medal at this tournament after a final defeat against the Russian selection .

For the first time in the senior sector, he represented the national team of Canada at the 2015 World Cup , with the team directly winning the gold medal. This was followed by participation in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 in the North America team and silver medals at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships .

His father Sylvain Couturier was also an ice hockey player and played in the NHL for the Los Angeles Kings .
