Shayne Gostisbehere (born April 20, 1993 in Pembroke Pines , Florida ) is an American ice hockey player of French origin who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers since April 2014 .
Career
High School and College (2009-2014)
Gostisbehere, who has both American and French citizenship, began his career in the 2009/10 season in the hockey team of the South Kent School , for which he played two seasons in the school league United States High School and served as team captain in his second season . Between 2011 and 2014, the American was on the ice for the university team of Union College in ECAC Hockey , which is part of the NCAA's game operations . In 2013 Gostisbehere took part in the U20 World Cup with the US U20 national team and won the gold medal with his team. The following year, the defensive player made a name for himself with strong performances in the NCAA, scoring nine goals and 25 assists in 42 games this season and was able to secure the college championship with his team . Following the season, Gostisbehere was recognized as both the best defender in the league and the most outstanding player in the NCAA final tournament.
Philadelphia Flyers (since 2014)
In April 2014, the Gostisbehere signed an entry contract with the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League , which had previously secured the transfer rights to him as part of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft . However, he came due to a cruciate ligament rupture in the following season 2014/15 to only two appearances in the top division of North America and completed five more games for the farm team Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the American Hockey League .
After starting the 2015/16 season in the AHL, the defender was reassigned to the NHL squad in November 2015 and scored his first NHL goal a little later in the game against the Los Angeles Kings . Gostisbehere then scored the decisive goal in overtime in two more games, becoming the first rookie in the Flyers ' jersey to score more than one goal in overtime. In January and February 2016, Gostisbehere scored at least one scorer point in 15 consecutive games , setting a record for rookie defenders in the NHL (previously Barry Beck , 10 games, 1977/78) and for all rookies of the Philadelphia Flyers ( Mikael Renberg , 10 games, 1993/94). As a result, Gostisbehere ended the season as the rookie defender with the highest points and at the same time in 5th place on the entire rookie scorer list, so that he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team . In the election for the best rookie in the league ( Calder Memorial Trophy ), he only had to admit defeat to the winner Artemi Panarin .
After the 2016/17 season, Gostisbehere signed a new six-year contract in Philadelphia that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.5 million. He then increased his personal statistics significantly to 65 points from 72 games, placing him among the five most attacking defenders in the league.
Style of play
Gostisbehere is considered an offensive defender who, due to his technical skills and overview of the game, often intervenes in the attacking game and regularly receives working times in overpowering situations. He is described as a fast skater who, however, has deficits in defensive play and is often faced with problems in duels due to his stature.
