Mikael Renberg (born May 5, 1972 in Piteå ) is a former Swedish ice hockey striker who played for the Philadelphia Flyers , Tampa Bay Lightning , Phoenix Coyotes and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1988 to 2009 .

Career

Mikael Renberg started his career in 1988 in his hometown Piteå at Piteå HC in the first division. With his first two seasons he was able to attract the attention of the NHL scouts and so he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 in the second round at position 40 by the Philadelphia Flyers . Then Renberg moved to Luleå HF in the Elitserien , where he played for another three years.

In 1993 Renberg went to North America and played his first season for the Philadelphia Flyers. He impressed with 82 points in 83 games and was only beaten by goalkeeper Martin Brodeur in the Calder Memorial Trophy election for the best rookie of the season. With the 82 points, however, he also set a mark that he should no longer achieve in the course of his career. He shouldn't get more than 59 points in the NHL.

From the 1994/95 season he formed the "Legion of Doom" series together with John LeClair and Eric Lindros . They led the team to the 1997 Stanley Cup finals, where they lost to the Detroit Red Wings . Just two months later, Renberg was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning and was named team captain.

But only 14 months later, the Flyers brought him back in December 1998 in a transfer deal. In March 2000 he was given to the Phoenix Coyotes , where he completed a few more games in the regular season and in the playoffs , but then did not renew his contract.

He returned to Sweden in the summer of 2000, where he played the 2000/01 season at Luleå HF in the Elitserien. There he flourished again as a top scorer and received the gold puck as the best Swedish player of the year. After the season he signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs . There he proved his skills as a defensive attacker and played for Toronto for three years. In the summer of 2004, the lockout began in the NHL and the 2004/05 season was canceled. Like many players, he moved to Europe in order to still play ice hockey during that time. He was drawn back to Luleå HF.

While most players returned to North America in the summer of 2005, Renberg stayed in Sweden and played successfully for Luleå. After three years, they parted ways and Renberg switched to competitor Skellefteå AIK , where he ended his career following the 2008/09 season.
