Nico Sturm (born May 3, 1995 in Augsburg ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League (NHL) since April 2019 and at the same time for their farm team , the Iowa Wild , in the American Hockey League (AHL) plays on the position of the center .

Career

The Sturm, who comes from the Augsburg district of Neubergheim , played as a youth for the Augsburg EV and then for the ESV Kaufbeuren and in the 2011/12 season also for the HC Landsberg temporarily . In January 2014 he moved to the United States for the Corpus Christi Ice Rays  from the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and played in this second-highest junior division in the USA from the 2014/15 season for the Austin Bruins . In the 2015/16 season, the attacker moved to the higher-ranking United States Hockey League (USHL) and was active there for the Tri-City Storm , with which he won the USHL playoffs for the Clark Cup at the end of the year .

In autumn 2016 storm took a degree in Economics in the State of New York located Clarkson University and at the same time secured a regular place in the ice hockey team of the university, the Clarkson Golden Knights . For the Golden Knights, he ran in the following three years in the ECAC , a college league in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which was marked by numerous successes and awards for him. As a freshman he was called to the ECAC All-Rookie Team , before being elected to the Third All-Star Team and the First All-Star Team in the following seasons . In addition, the Center was named the league's best defensive striker in 2018 and 2019, while captaining the ECAC championship in his third and final year of college . He was also nominated as one of ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award , which honors the best college player in the United States.

Without previously being considered in an NHL Entry Draft , Sturm signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild from the National Hockey League (NHL) as a free agent in early April 2019 as a free agent until the end of the 2018/19 season . A little later he made his debut in the top division of North America. In July 2019, the Wild extended his contract by one year until the end of the 2019/20 season.

International

Sturm took part with the German U20 national team in the 2015 U20 World Junior Championship in the Canadian cities of Toronto and Montreal . He remained pointless in six tournament games, received twelve penalty minutes and rose with the team as tenth in the final classification in Group A of Division I.

The striker has not made any international appearances for the senior national team .

family

His older brother Dennis Sturm (* 1993) is also an ice hockey player and played a game for ESV Kaufbeuren in the DEL2 in the 2011/12 season . However , he is not related to Marco Sturm .
