Bergheim is the most south-westerly district of Augsburg with around 2600 inhabitants and an area of around 22.08 km² .
Districts
- Gut Bannacker (in the southwest on the municipal border with Bobingen )
- Bergheim (main town)
- Neubergheim (northeast of the main town)
- Radegundis (in the northwest on the municipal boundary to Stadtbergen )
- Wellenburg (town and castle, between the main town and Radegundis)
Waters
The Diebelbach , a groundwater ditch with a slight gradient, usually only a slight water flow, flows through the Bergheim district from Gut Bannacker in the southwest to the fire settlement in the northeast, where it flows into the Wertach . The Bergheimer Baggersee is located between the districts of Bergheim and Neubergheim.
Adjacent areas
In the east, the Bergheim district is bounded by the Wertach and the Augsburg districts of Inningen and Göggingen . The municipality of Stadtbergen (district of Leitershofen) connects to the north . The southern border is formed by the area of the city of Bobingen , while the nature park connects to the western forests in the west .
history
The first settlement of the area is expected to be nearly 3,000 years as one between Radegundis and Bannacker barrows from the Hallstatt period found. The so-called wagon grave in the Wellenburg district is particularly well-known , from which clay vessels, gold sheet and parts of a wagon could be retrieved. In 1818 the remains of a grave monument of the Roman Tacitus were found in the churchyard of St. Remigius . A number of coins depicting the Roman emperor Augustus also indicate the presence of the Romans. The Bergheim settlement was probably founded in the 8th or 9th century AD when the forest was cleared from an old Roman site. The parish of Bergheim was first mentioned in 1143 as part of the Archdeaconate Augsburg, which, in addition to Bergheim, included the parishes Stadtbergen , Gersthofen , Göggingen , Haunstetten , Hirblingen , Inningen , Lechhausen , Pfersee , Oberhausen , Leitershofen and Steppach . In the period that followed, Bergheim was ruled by the Lords von Bannacker and Wellenburg. At the end of the 16th century, the Fuggers moved into Wellenburg and took over rule. During the Thirty Years' War , especially between 1635 and 1640, the town and church were burned down several times by Swedes passing through. In 1690 today's baroque church was built. In the 1960s, a monastery was built about 200 m north of the church, which serves as a retirement home for members of the clergy.
Until the municipal reform , Bergheim was an independent rural municipality. This was then incorporated into Inningen by emergency act on June 30, 1972 . On the following day Inningen was incorporated into Augsburg together with Göggingen and Haunstetten . In the 1980s and 1990s in particular, new residential areas with double and multi-family houses were built on the north-eastern and western fringes of the main town.
Attractions
Parish Church of St. Remigius
Today's baroque church was built between 1690 and 1693 on the basis of a smaller, late Gothic church from the 13th or 14th century. The founders were Margarethe Theresia von Bodman (abbess of the St. Stephan monastery in Augsburg) and Anton Josef Fugger. In 1790 the church was extensively renovated and frescoed in the classical style by the Augsburg church painter Johann Josef Anton Huber . In 1828 a new high altar was installed, which had already been built around 1740 and originally stood in a side chapel of Augsburg Cathedral. In its antependium, the altar shows depictions from the life of St. John of Nepomuk and has an altarpiece of St. Remigius .
Old rectory
The classical building was erected in 1773 by the Augsburg master builder Johann Martin Pentenrieder in place of an older building.
Wellenburg Castle
→ Main article: Wellenburg Castle
On a wooded hill between the main town Bergheim and the district of Radegundis stands the Wellenburg Castle, which has been inhabited by the Fugger -Babenhausen family since the end of the 16th century . Saint Radegundis was once a maid in this castle. From Göggingen an avenue approx. Two kilometers long leads to the castle. Below the castle is the Wellenburg estate with a restaurant, a popular excursion destination for Augsburg residents.
Good Bannacker
Gut Bannacker is located on the southwest corner of the Bergheim district. The estate, which was built in the middle of the 13th century (and has been structurally modified several times), is now privately owned. Next to the manor there is a chapel from 1748, which is consecrated to St. Leonhard . Every year a Leonhardiritt takes place from the main town to Gut Bannacker with holy mass and horse consecration. The inn, which has existed for around 300 years, was closed a few years ago.
