Hammerschmiede is a district in the north-east of Augsburg with about 7100 inhabitants on an area of 9.02 km² . Hammerschmiede is the 29th of 41 Augsburg city districts and at the same time the fifth of XVII planning areas .

location

In the west, the hammer mill is bordered by the Firnhaberau , in the south by the districts of Lechhausen -West and -Est. The northern and eastern borders are also the city limits.

history

In 1821 a hammer forge was built in the northeast of what is now Hammerschmiede am Mühlbach . The district was named after her. This hammer forge no longer exists today, but was still in operation as a steam hammer mill until 1944. After the river bed of the Lech was dug, the level of the Mühlbach fell. Today you can only see the dried up river bed and a few small bridges that remind you that a stream flowed here.

The district was officially founded in 1934 by the eastern parts of the Firnhaberau and the acquisition of cleared land by the city.
In the district there is a primary school (up to fourth grade), a Waldorf school with an attached kindergarten and two other kindergartens. SV Hammerschmiede offers sports facilities with its Rudolf Schnitzlein sports facility , where the former Bundesliga soccer player and current professional coach, Bernd Schuster , started his soccer career. There are several playgrounds and an adventure playground for children . Several shops of all kinds, as well as banks, service providers, eateries and bars ensure short distances. Next to the school in Pappelweg is the Catholic Church of Christ the King , built in 1934 and expanded in 1964 . For the Protestant settlers was on the verge of Firnhaberau the St. Luke's Church built. On the northern side of the autobahn is the recreational area Autobahnsee , which can be reached via a bicycle and pedestrian bridge. The responsible police station east is in Lechhausen .
