The parish church of Christ the King

The Christkönig Church is the Roman Catholic parish church in the Hammerschmiede district of Augsburg .

history

Shortly after the Hammerschmiede settlement was founded, the first church building was consecrated in 1934 by Joseph Kumpfmüller , Bishop of Augsburg . In the night of bombing in Augsburg from February 25th to 26th, 1944, the church was damaged so that it could no longer be used for the time being. On October 12, 1950, the parish was separated from the mother parish of St. Pankratius and raised to the status of an independent parish.

The foundation stone for the new church was laid in 1963 because the old one was too small for the growing part of the city. The architect was Karl Sendlinger. The newly covered tower was integrated into the new building with the apse of the old church enlarged to a chapel . Bishop Josef Stimpfle consecrated the church on December 13, 1964. The choir was redesigned in 1992 by Georg Bernhard .
