Joseph Kumpfmüller (born May 2, 1869 in Schwarzenberg ; † February 9, 1949 in Augsburg ) was Bishop of Augsburg from 1930 to 1949.

Life

Kumpfmüller was born on May 2, 1869 in Schwarzenberg near Eschlkam . After attending grammar school in Metten Monastery , he began to study in Rome and then did his doctorate in philosophy and theology. He was then ordained a priest on October 28, 1894 in the collegiate church of the Germanicum . In 1895, Kumpfmüller initially worked as an assistant priest in Loiching and one year later, until 1900, he took over the service as episcopal chaplain and secretary. From 1900 to 1908 Kumpfmüller was church preacher and later director of the episcopal seminary in Obermünster. Then he took over the office of cathedral preacher of Regensburg. At the same time he was also teaching religion at the girls' school in Niedermünster. In 1917 he was employed for the Regensburg cathedral parish. In 1919 he was appointed both director and clerical advisory board for the sick care of the Third Order .

Pope Pius XI finally appointed him on September 17, 1930 Bishop of Augsburg and made him the successor of Bishop Maximilian von Lingg , who died in May . He was consecrated as a bishop on October 28, 1930 by the then Archbishop of Munich and Freising , Michael Cardinal von Faulhaber .

Pastoral care and helping others were of great importance to him. For example, he supported the citizens of Augsburg after the Second World War, who were plagued by the severe housing shortage, with the establishment of the Christian Housing Aid (later the Sankt-Ulrichs-Werk). At the age of 79, Kumpfmüller died on February 9, 1949 in Augsburg after a long period of suffering.
