Wellenburger Allee
The straight Wellenburger Allee is one of the most imposing linden avenues in the Bavarian-Swabian region. It is a two-kilometer section of the Wellenburger Strasse in the south of the Augsburg city area. The avenue begins at the bridge over the Wertach in the Augsburg district of Göggingen and leads in a straight line to Wellenburg Castle . The over 350 winter linden trees thus form a visual axis and underline the importance of the castle.
First planting and development
The first trees on the avenue were planted in 1840. Further new plantings were finally made between 1880 and 1920. After that, if necessary, old or diseased trees were regularly replaced with new trees. In November 1975, the city of Augsburg declared Wellenburger Allee a protected landscape component by ordinance .
In the severe storm on June 20, 2013, numerous trees on the avenue were damaged and the appearance was permanently impaired. The necessary clean-up work took several days. All trees uprooted by the storm were replanted.
