Gregory Pitl (born September 18, 1982 in Augsburg ) is a German chess player .

Life

After attending the Maria-Theresia-Gymnasium in Augsburg, Pitl studied business mathematics at the University of Augsburg . He was a research assistant at the University of Augsburg and lives in Augsburg-Bergheim . In addition to chess, he also plays soccer in the Augsburg-Süd district league at SV Bergheim . He has two siblings, a brother and a sister. His father Johannes Pitl is a fully retired lawyer who was awarded the title of International Organizer by the World Chess Federation ( FIDE ) in 2007 . So far, fewer than a handful of people in Germany have received this honor.

As a youth player, Pitl achieved a total of nine national championship titles. In 1995 he became the Bavarian Rapid Champion ( rapid chess ) of the U 13, and from 1995 to 2002 he was Blitz -Bayernmeister in uninterrupted order .

In September 2006 Pitl was awarded the title of International Master with the proviso that he achieved an Elo rating of at least 2400. He achieved the first norm for this at a GM tournament in January 2004 in Augsburg, the second norm in August 2005 in Olomouc in the Czech Republic and the third norm in April 2006 at the 10th Neckar Open in Deizisau . Pitl achieved the required Elo rating in October 2007.

In September 2007 he won the 18th Casino Open in Seefeld in Tirol . At the 11th International Open 2009 in Barcelona with 300 participants in the A tournament from 33 nations with 16 grandmasters and 26 international masters, Pitl managed a victory against grandmaster Vitaly Kunin and a “marathon draw” after more than 60 moves with the designated grandmaster Leonid Milov .

In 2009 he was able to take third place in the Open International Bavarian University Team Championship with the Augusta Vindelicorum (Augsburg) team .

In Germany he played for SK 1908 Göggingen , where his father Johannes is president and his older brother Jarno also plays; all three have played together in the first team. Gregory Pitl is the captain of the newly founded BCA Augsburg , which took over the playing authorization of SK 1908 Göggingen in the 2nd Bundesliga East from 2017 and has been playing in the 1st Bundesliga since the 2018/19 season . In Austria he played in the 2nd League West and later in the 1st Bundesliga for Wüstenrot Inter Salzburg Süd , in the Catalan Divisio Honor for Barberà .
