The section fortification Spitalwald (municipality Augsburg , district Bergheim ) is about 50 meters above the Anhauser Tal on a ridge in the Augsburg-Westliche Wälder nature park ( Bavarian Swabia ). The ground monument probably goes back to a Bronze Age settlement or fortification.

description

An elongated ridge above the Burlafinger Weiher falls in steps to the north and south into the side valleys. In the western ridge area, the upper part of the terrain seems to have been artificially divided, especially to the south. At the southeast end of this division, an arched ditch starts, which is accompanied by a short section wall on the northern slope edge . The section trench, which is around 1.5 meters deep, is not elevated on the inside by any remains of a wall.

The almost flat, 20 to 30 meters wide and 100 meters long plateau west of the section fortification was changed by forestry measures and does not indicate any development.

Time and purpose

The section fortification differs significantly from most of the numerous ramparts in the Augsburg area. The fleeting execution and the shallow depth of the trench indicate an early development. Many protective castles in this region were used until the early Middle Ages and are therefore interpreted in their final expansion stage as Hungarian protective castles of the 10th century ( battle on the Lechfeld ). Just a few kilometers to the south-east, such a small alleged Hungarian wall has been preserved in the form of the Strasbourg fortification.

The section fortification in the Spitalwald does not reveal any clear indications of continued use until the early Middle Ages. In particular, the typical hillside ditches of early medieval castles are missing in the hospital forest. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments suspects a Bronze Age settlement or castle site (monument number D-7-7630-0073). The exact time of the monument remains speculative until a professional archaeological investigation of the site.
