Wertach vital is a water protection project of the Free State of Bavaria and the city of Augsburg , the declared aim of which is to restore the Wertach to a natural state. For this purpose, various building measures have been carried out on the Wertach since 2000.

In the previous decades, the river bed was straightened and channeled, alluvial forests and extensive gravel banks were removed. The consequences were an increase in the flow velocity and the drag force of the river. When there was a flood, there were no flood plains, so that settlement areas were often affected. The Pentecost flood in 1999 provided a special impetus for the planning .

The project focuses on the last 14 kilometers before the Lech estuary. This part of the Wertach was divided into three sections (Wertach vital I to III). The main measures of the project include the widening of the watercourse, the reconstruction of weir systems and dykes, and the creation of retention areas . Construction officially began on October 20, 2000. The Wertach vital I section was completed in 2009. The work in the Wertach vital II section is still ongoing. At the end of 2013, work began on this section between Bundesstraße 17 and the Localbahnbrücke in Pfersee.
