Radegundis legend

According to legend, Radegundis looked after the poor and the sick in the nearby infirmary ; one day she is said to have been attacked by wolves on the way home and seriously injured. She died three days later at Wellenburg Castle and was buried near the infirmary ( Gespannwunder ).

A chapel was built on the site of the burial, which was granted privileges around 1450 and developed into a place of pilgrimage . Around 1520, Cardinal Matthäus Lang had a Gothic church built and in 1521 a commemorative coin with the inscription "ORA PRO NOBIS DEUM SANCTA VIRGO RADIANA" was minted.

At the beginning of the 19th century this Radegundis church was destroyed by a storm. Imperial Prince Anselm Maria Fugger had the bones and most of the furnishings transferred "in silence" to Waldberg in 1812 , where they now rest under the high altar of the church. Waldberg became a new place of pilgrimage for St. Radegundis, their festival, first celebrated in 1819, takes place on the fourth Sunday after Pentecost.

Radegundis in the fine arts

In 1521 Jakob Burkmair made three woodcuts with scenes from the legend.

Also in 1521, Hans Burgkmair the Elder , commissioned Cardinal Lang, created a woodcut in which Radiana was attacked by two wolves.

Fifteen paintings (oil on canvas) about the Radegundis legend were donated by Count Anton Joseph Fugger and other noble families between 1682 and 1691 and are in the church of Waldberg in the Augsburg district .
