Todd Reirden (born June 25, 1971 in Deerfield , Illinois ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach . The defender played 188 games for the Edmonton Oilers , St. Louis Blues , Atlanta Thrashers and Phoenix Coyotes in the National Hockey League , but spent the majority of his career in minor leagues, which was characterized by frequent changes . Since June 2014 he worked as an assistant coach at the Washington Capitals in the NHL and served as their 18th head coach from June 2018 to August 2020.

Career

As a player

Todd Reirden attended Deerfield Academy in his hometown and later the Tabor Academy in Massachusetts and played for their ice hockey teams in regional high school leagues. In 1990, the defender enrolled at Bowling Green State University and from then on took part with their Falcons in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), a league within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). After his first year in college, he was selected in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft in 242nd position by the New Jersey Devils before increasing his personal statistics from season to season. In his fourth and final season in 1993/94 he recorded 30 points scorer in 38 games and then moved to the professional area, but the New Jersey Devils did not make use of their rights acquired in the draft.

Reirden began his professional career in the ECHL and was active there in his first two professional years with the Raleigh IceCaps , Tallahassee Tiger Sharks and Jacksonville Lizard Kings , while he also played two appearances with the Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League (AHL). From 1996 the defender established himself in the International Hockey League (IHL), but also changed the team here regularly, so he ran until 1998 for the Chicago Wolves , San Antonio Dragons and Fort Wayne Komets . With his services there he recommended himself in the episode for the National Hockey League (NHL), so that he was committed as a free agent by the Edmonton Oilers in September 1998 . For this, the American made his debut in January 1999 in the top division of North America, but was mainly used in their farm team , the Hamilton Bulldogs , in the AHL. After a year in Edmonton, he came in September 1999 via the waiver to the St. Louis Blues , in whose NHL line-up he subsequently established himself and was regularly on the ice for the first time in the NHL. After the 2000/01 season, his expiring contract was not extended, so he joined the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent , as well as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim the following year . In contrast to Atlanta, the defender in Anaheim received no more NHL service time, so that after one and a half years at the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in January 2004 he was given to the Phoenix Coyotes without any further consideration . The Coyotes, who used him primarily with the Springfield Falcons , should be his last NHL station. The Houston Eros , in which he ran up in the following season 2004/05, subsequently marked his last team in North America.

In 2005 Reirden decided to end his career in Europe. He spent the 2005/06 season with the DEG Metro Stars in the German Ice Hockey League , before playing in 2006/07 for the EC Graz 99ers in the Austrian EBEL and for SønderjyskE Ishockey in the Danish Oddset Ligaen . He then ended his active career, in which he had completed a total of 188 NHL, 214 IHL and 266 AHL games.

In July 2010 he followed Bylsma to Pittsburgh and was there again as an assistant coach until the entire NHL coaching staff of the Penguins was dismissed after the 2013/14 season. A little later, the Washington Capitals hired him in June 2014 as the new assistant to Barry Spy , with whom he led the team in the 2018 playoffs for the first Stanley Cup in franchise history . After this success, however, defiance resigned from the Capitals and moved to the New York Islanders , which Reirden was promoted to head coach.
