Jerome Flaake (born March 2, 1990 in Wilhelm-Pieck-Stadt Guben , GDR ) is a German ice hockey player . Since May 2018 he has been under contract with Düsseldorfer EG in the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
Flaake was born in Guben , but moved with his family to Königsbrunn when he was two years old. At the age of seven he started playing ice hockey at ESV Königsbrunn and later moved to Augsburg EV . In the 2005/06 season, the attacker was active for SC Riessersee in the German junior league, but retired with the team in the play-off quarter-finals. Flaake spent the following season with Jungadler Mannheim , the junior team of the DEL club Adler Mannheim . There, the left-handed shooter became the most successful goalscorer in the preliminary round with 32 hits in 36 games. In the final of the play-offs , however, the striker failed with the MERC to the Cologne Junghaien .
In the summer of 2007 Flaake finally switched to the then final opponent and in his first season in the cathedral city was eligible to play for both the DNL team and the DEL team of the Haie, where he made his debut during the season and played 30 games this season. At the same time Flaake secured the title of top scorer of the DNL with 74 points in 32 games . Following the season, the winger was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2008 in the fifth round in 130th place by the Toronto Maple Leafs . In addition, the Prince George Cougars from the Western Hockey League voted him ninth overall in the CHL Import Draft .
In summer 2010 Flaake moved within the DEL to the Hamburg Freezers , where he established himself as a strong attacking winger after a year from the 2011/12 season and formed one of the best strikings in the league in an attacking formation with Garrett Festerling and David Wolf over several seasons . During this phase, however, Flaake also had to accept some setbacks in the form of serious injuries, for example he suffered a broken fibula and a syndesmosis ligament during the play-off game against Eisbären Berlin in March 2013 , which meant the premature end of the season for him. In January 2015, the left shooter fell unhappy to the ground after an argument with his opponent Ryan Button from the Iserlohn Roosters and tore his labrum , so that he had to accept an early season off again. Before that, Flaake scored his 78th goal in Hamburg's jersey against EHC Red Bull Munich in December 2014, overtaking Alexander Barta as the second best goalscorer in the club's history.
In May 2016, the owner of Freezers, Anschutz Entertainment Group , announced that it would not apply for a DEL license for the 2016/17 season. A rescue operation initiated at short notice was unable to avert the end. Flaake, who still had a contract in Hamburg until 2018, was faced with a termination like all employees of the Freezers. On June 2, 2016, EHC Red Bull Munich announced its commitment. In his first year in Munich he won the German championship with Upper Bavaria and was able to repeat this success a year later.
For the 2018/19 season, Flaake moved to league rivals Düsseldorfer EG.
International
In the junior division, Flaake played with the German U18 team at the 2007 and 2008 World Championships in the top division. For the German U20 national ice hockey team , he competed in the top division at the 2009 World Championships and in Division I in 2008 and 2010 , when he was voted best striker.
Flaake has been a regular member of the German national team since 2010 , but had to forego participation in the World Championships in 2013 , 2014 and 2015 due to injuries. However, he took part in the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014 in February 2013 , in which the German selection failed to Austria . He made his World Cup debut in May 2016 .
