The 1987/88 season was the second regular season of the All-American Hockey League . During the regular season, the eight teams should play 44 games each, but the schedule had to be changed several times due to the early, financially-related, departure of the Michigan Stars and the shortened schedule of the Johnstown Chiefs . In the play-offs, the Virginia Lancers prevailed and became champions of the AAHL for the first time.

Team changes

The following changes were made before the start of the season:

• The Carolina Thunderbirds from the Atlantic Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
• The Johnstown Chiefs were added to the league as an expansion team.
• The Port Huron Clippers were added to the league as an expansion team.
• The Virginia Lancers from the Atlantic Coast Hockey League were added to the league as an expansion team.
• The Dayton Jets and Troy Sabers merged and from then on played under the name Miami Valley Sabers .
• The Downriver Stars changed their name to Michigan Stars.
