Zack Torquato (born June 8, 1989 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey striker who currently plays for the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League .
Career
Zack Torquato began his career in 2005 with the Saginaw Spirit in the Canadian Junior League OHL , after the team had selected him in third position in the OHL Entry Draft . He had a good debut season with 19 goals and 18 assists. In the first round of the playoffs , the Spirit failed after four games on Guelph Storm .
At the beginning of the 2006/07 season there was a negative incident when Torquato and four other Spirit players were charged with assaulting a 15-year-old. The lawsuit ultimately resulted in a two-year suspended sentence and 250 hours for social services for all five defendants.
In November 2006 Torquato was transferred within the league to the Erie Otters , where he was appointed alternate captain. Although the season had been running for almost two months and as a result he could only play 43 games for the Otters, at the end of the season he was the team's second best scorer with 46 points. However, they did not reach the playoffs, as the Otters experienced the worst season of their existence and could only win 15 of the 68 league games. Torquato was named the Otters MVP and Best Player. He was also used in spring 2007 for the Canadian junior national team at the U18 World Cup .
During the 2006/07 season, Torquato was in the first ranking for the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in 13th place in the OHL and in January 2007 in 36th place for the North American outfield player, before moving to 61st place in the final ranking. Rank slipped. The Detroit Red Wings finally selected him in the sixth lap in 178th position.
In the 2007/08 season he led the Erie Otters as team captain on the ice, but the team could only improve slightly compared to the previous year and again missed the playoffs. Torquato was again the team's second best scorer, but could not improve his points yield. In March 2008, he switched to the seniors for the first time when he signed a trial contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings from the AHL . There he was used in eleven games and scored one goal.
For the 2008/09 season, Torquato moved back to the juniors, where he continued to play for the Erie Otters, who presented themselves significantly improved and reached the playoffs. Torquato showed himself to be one of the leading players in the team, but could not show any progress in his development, which is why the Detroit Red Wings let the deadline for a contract pass and thus lost the rights to Torquato.
Zack Torquato has a good shot, player-maker and leadership skills, but he has weaknesses in physical play and ice skating.
