Joakim Andersson (born February 5, 1989 in Munkedal ) is a Swedish ice hockey striker who has been under contract with HV71 in the Svenska Hockeyligan since April 2018 .
Career
At the beginning of his career, Joakim Andersson played for his hometown club Munkedals BK in the Swedish fifth league before moving to Frölunda HC in 2005 at the age of 16 . There he played in the U20 team from the highest Swedish youth league and a good first year with 20 points in 35 games. In the playoffs he was even able to increase his points yield a little when Frölunda made it to the final.
In 2006/07 Andersson increased when he was one of the team's best strikers alongside his compatriot Simon Hjalmarsson and the two Danes Lars Eller and Mikkel Bødker . With 20 goals, Andersson was the team's second best scorer and had a total of 46 scorer points in the regular season. In the playoffs he was Frölunda's second best scorer behind Eller and thus helped the team to win the Swedish U20 championship. At the same time, some players from the U20 juniors, including Eller, Bødker and Andersson, supported the U18 team in the playoffs of their age group, but failed in the final.
Because of his good performance, the Detroit Red Wings selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in the third round in 88th position.
After Andersson had already played a game for the professionals of Frölunda during the 2006/07 season , he finally switched to the professional field in autumn 2007. In order to gain experience with the seniors, Frölunda loaned him to Borås HC from the second-class HockeyAllsvenskan at the beginning of the season . He integrated well into the team and was one of the best scorers in Borås with 23 points from 33 games. At the end of the season Andersson was ordered back by Frölunda and completed the last nine games of the season as well as the playoffs in the first-class Elitserien . After the professional team failed, he returned to the juniors once more to support the Frölunda U20 team in the fight for the championship, which they eventually won. Although Andersson only played five finals, he was the top scorer in the playoffs with six goals.
In the 2008/09 season Andersson was part of the regular team of the professional team of Frölunda HC.
On April 13, 2010 Andersson signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Detroit Red Wings . This was extended by two years in the summer of 2013 after the Swede had for the first time completed more appearances in the NHL than in the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL) in the 2012/13 season . In the following two seasons Andersson established himself in the NHL squad of the Red Wings, so that he received an additional year of contract in June 2015. In the following season 2015/16 he lost his regular place and only completed 34 games for the Red Wings and 19 for the Griffins in the AHL. As a result, Andersson decided to return to his home country, so that he signed a two-year contract with Örebro HK in April 2016 . After the two-year period, Andersson moved to HV71 Jönköping within the Swedish league .
Joakim Andersson is considered a two-way striker who shows good performances both on the offensive with playmaker skills and on the defensive with his physically tough game. He has strong puck control and is a good face-off player. However, he has weaknesses in his speed as well as in the area of fitness.
International
Joakim Andersson made his debut for the Swedish national team at the 2006 U18 World Cup in front of a home crowd. The “three crowns” selection failed in the quarter-finals to the Czech Republic and also lost the game for fifth place against Russia .
Also in 2007 Andersson took part in the U18 World Cup, which this time was successful. Although they had to admit defeat in the semi-finals of the Russian selection, in the game for the bronze medal they clearly beat the Canadian team 8: 3.
In 2008 he was part of the Swedish U20 team that competed in the Junior World Championships . Sweden made it to the final and equalized a 2-0 deficit against Canada in the last third before North America scored the winning goal in extra time. With six assists from six games, Andersson was the best assists of his team and behind Jordan Schroeder and Marek Slovák the third best preparer of the entire tournament.
Andersson made his fourth international appearance for the Swedish youth team at the U20 World Cup in 2009 .
