Mickey Renaud (born October 5, 1988 in Tecumseh , Ontario ; † February 18, 2008 in Windsor , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey striker who was active for the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League from 2005 to 2008 .

Career

Mickey Renaud was selected by the Windsor Spitfires in the 2004 OHL Priority Selection Draft and made his junior league debut in the 2005-06 season . Renaud played a solid year, scoring eight goals and 18 assists in 68 league games and moving into the playoffs with the Spitfires , where they failed in the first round.

The 2006/07 season was marked by sporting failures of the team. They finished penultimate in the OHL and with only 18 wins from 68 games it was the franchise's worst season since 1990. Renaud was one of the few bright spots in the team, was able to improve significantly compared to his rookie season and was second best scorer the Spitfires with 54 points.

The Calgary Flames selected him in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round at position 143.

For the 2007/08 season , Renaud took over the position of team captain of the Spitfires and the team was in much better shape than in the previous year, so that the team secured a playoff spot on February 14, 2008 despite 13 games still to be played.

Four days later, on February 18, 2008, Renaud collapsed at his home and was admitted to Windsor Regional Hospital . Any attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. The autopsy revealed that he suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and died of natural causes .

Mickey Renaud was considered a good striker with leadership skills who had mastered the physical game and who had developed well in the OHL. Precisely because of his physical style of play and his size, he was trusted to make the leap into the National Hockey League . Due to his death, the shirt with the number 18 worn by Renaud will no longer be awarded at the Windsor Spitfires. Furthermore, the Ontario Hockey League created a trophy in memory of the deceased. The Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy has been awarded every year since the spring of 2009 to players with outstanding leadership skills.

Mark Renaud , Mickey's father, was an ice hockey player himself and played 152 games in the NHL for the Hartford Whalers and Buffalo Sabers from 1979 to 1984 .
