Jiří Novotný (born August 12, 1983 in Pelhřimov , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Ambrì-Piotta in the National League since September 2018 .

Career

The 1.93 m tall center began his career at HC České Budějovice in the Czech extra league before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft as 22nd in the first round by the Buffalo Sabers .

The right-handed shooter initially stayed in Budweis for two years , after which he moved to the American Hockey League for the Rochester Americans , a farm team of the Sabers. On January 12, 2006 Novotný made his NHL debut for Buffalo in the game against the Phoenix Coyotes , already in the next game he scored his first point when he assisted Daniel Paille on January 14 in the game against the Los Angeles Kings . The Czech scored his first goal on February 11 against the Florida Panthers .

On February 27, 2007 Jiří Novotný was transferred to the Washington Capitals together with a first round pick for the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in exchange for Dainius Zubrus and Timo Helbling . After the season he signed a contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets , where he spent the following two game years. After that, his contract was not renewed and he moved to Russia to Atlant Mytishchi from the Continental Hockey League . In 2010 he moved to league rivals Barys Astana , for whom he completed over 100 KHL games in the following two years. In July 2012 his current contract with Barys was terminated and Novotný returned to the Czech Republic, where he signed a three-year contract with HC Lev Prague . With HC Lev he reached the playoff final in 2014. After the club withdrew from the KHL, Novotný moved to Lokomotive Jaroslawl together with Martin Thörnberg . There he was appointed assistant captain and was the team's third-best scorer in his first season. In his second season his performance decreased (only 13 points scorer), so that he did not receive a contract extension. He spent part of the 2016/17 season at HK Tractor Chelyabinsk .

In September 2019 Novotný initially moved to HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League for two months . In October, his contract was extended to the end of the season and in January 2019 to 2020. In July 2019, he injured himself during the pre-season and was out for four months.
