history

Main square in Pelhřimov with the tower of the Church of St. Bartholomew

After Vladislav II had left the area east of Chýnov to the Moravian border to the diocese of Prague in 1144, the Gaus was settled, the center of which was Řečice . The first settlement was probably established in the second half of the 12th century on the place of today's Starý Pelhřimov. After a new settlement was built around the church of St. Vitus and today's Hrnčířská ulice in the 13th century, the name was transferred to it. In 1289 Pelhřimov was devastated in an incursion by the Witigonen Vítek von Hluboká . After Řečice was devastated by a city fire in 1384, the expansion of Pelhřimov to the new center of the Řečice rule took place. The silver mining around the Křemešník and Vyskytná was decisive for the development to the economic center . In 1406 Archbishop Zbynko Zajíc von Hasenburg granted the city great privileges and regulated the rights between the council and the rulers.

1415 pledged Konrad von Vechta the rule Pelhřimov including Řečice to the knight Jan von Chotěmice . In 1422 the Taborites conquered the area during the Hussite Wars . Subsequently, the rule belonged to different noble families. In 1436 it was bought by Mikuláš Trčka from Lípa . On his initiative, four state parliaments were held in Pelhřimov in the 1440s to mediate between Catholics and Hussites. After the death of Mikuláš Trčka von Lípas, the rule fell back to the court chamber. Ladislaus Postumus divided it in 1454 into the dominions Řečice and Pelhřimov. Pelhřimov fell to Mikuláš Trčka's sons, Řečice was owned by the widower Heinrich von Stráž.

In 1549 the Lords of Říčany acquired the Pelhřimov estate. Subsequently, there were ongoing feuds between the city and the rulers, which led to the city buying itself out of subordination in 1572. In 1596 Pelhřimov was elevated to a free royal town. The Thirty Years War put an end to the prosperity of the city, which was sacked by various troops. The Pelhřimov estate, which was confiscated from the rebels' property in 1623, was given to the Archdiocese of Prague. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Pelhřimov developed into a cloth-making town and numerous factories were established. After the great fire of 1766, the city was rebuilt in the baroque style. In the 19th century industrialization began, mainly brush and knitwear factories and starch factories. After the abolition of patrimonial Pelhřimov was in 1850 the seat of a district administration and a judicial district. In 1883 the Bohemian-Moravian Transversal Railway began construction of the railway line from Tábor to Horní Cerekev , which was inaugurated in 1889. Until 2001 Pelhřimov was the administrative seat of the Okres Pelhřimov .
