Žirovnice (German Serownitz , also Serowitz ) is a town with a little more than three thousand inhabitants in the Czech Republic . It lies at 567 m above sea level. M. 18 km northeast of Jindřichův Hradec and 38 km southwest of Jihlava on the river Žirovnice and belongs to the Okres Pelhřimov .
history
Žirovnice was first mentioned in 1345 as a castle owned by Ulrich III. von Neuhaus , whose family probably also had it built. The settlement around the castle was first mentioned in 1385. In 1485 Václav Vencelík ( Wentzelickh ) Baron von Vrchovište from Kutná Hora acquired the rule and a little later had the castle rebuilt and expanded. The frescoes , which are still partially preserved today and are unique in their kind , with which he had the property decorated come from this time . The current city arms (silver unicorn in blue field) are based on the Vencelík family arms. In the following centuries the lords of Gutštejn, again the lords of Neuhaus and the Slavata family owned Žirovnice, but they changed little in the aristocratic seat.
The inhabitants of the settlement initially lived mainly from agriculture. A pottery and a beer brewery as well as the manufacture of bricks and textiles were added later. During the Thirty Years War , Žirovnice and the whole region were devastated by both imperial and Swedish troops, and the castle was also damaged. At the end of the 17th century, the rule came to the Šternberk family , who had the castle and several village churches and chapels repaired.
In 1854 Žirovnice received town charter. In 1864 Josef Žampach founded the main line of business in the city with his mother-of-pearl button manufacture, which is still in existence today, to which a separate exhibition in the castle museum is dedicated.
In 1910 the citizenship acquired the castle and the estate from the Šternberks. After a devastating fire in 1964, the renovation of the palace could not be completed until 1992.
