Senožaty is located in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands on a ridge between the Želivka valleys and its tributary Martinický potok. The dam of the Švihov dam extends to the north in both valleys . The hill Nečický vršek (508 m) rises to the south.

Neighboring towns are Děkančice, Hroznětice and Vojslavice in the north, Chalupy and Koberovice in the north-east, U Vokouna, Býkovka, Otavožaty, Miletín, Ždíry, Lhotice and Závodí in the east, Vitice and Milostice in the south-east, Tukleky and Čiřičice in the south-east , Košetice , Horka and Onšov in the west and Nový Dvůr and Syrov in the northwest.

history

The place was founded at the transition from the 12th to the 13th century by the Seelau monastery. Senožatný was first mentioned in a document in 1352. In 1372 Senožatný was referred to as a town. In 1384 a stone parish church was built and consecrated to James the Elder. The place belonged to the property of the monastery, which also took care of the spiritual care. After Senožatný the villages Otavožaty, Čihovice, Nečice, Tukleky, Syrov and Děkančice were parish. The Senožaty coat of arms was created in 1651.

In 1678 the Abbot Strobl and the Iglau pharmacist Kauzmann examined the water of a well, which was said to have healing properties. Strobl immediately had a bath built and the water warmed up. In 1679 Bohuslav Balbín praised the Senožaty Sour Fountain in his Additamenta ad libry . Strobl regularly cured himself in Senožaty in summer and autumn and other clergymen were given permission to use the bath.

On December 31, 1749, a major fire destroyed 13 properties. Another fire fell on June 14, 1772, 43 houses including the church and the rectory. The fire of May 15, 1814, left 51 houses in ruins, and in turn it also hit the church and the rectory.

After the abolition of patrimonial Senožaty formed from 1850 with the districts Otavožaty, Tukleky and Nečice a market town in the district administration Německý Brod . In 1890 Tukleky broke away and formed its own community. At the beginning of the 20th century, the production of mother-of-pearl buttons began in Senožaty, and these were also exported to the German Empire. From 1910 Senožaty belonged to the Humpolec district . In 1948 Senožaty lost the status of Městys . In 1952 a garrison of the Czechoslovak Army was stationed in Senožaty. In 1961 the community was assigned to the Okres Pelhřimov . At the end of the 1960s, the construction of the Švihov dam began, through which the deeply cut romantic valley north of the village sank into a reservoir from 1976 in the river loops of the Želivka up to the Biela mill. In 1974 Tukleky was incorporated. The garrison site was dissolved in 1994, and the barracks have been empty since then. On June 13, 2004, the community flag was consecrated.

According to more recent investigations of the Sauerbrunnen a nitrate content of about 120 mg / l was determined and the water is only used for irrigation purposes today.
