In the summer of 1999, he left the club after all, but switched within Sweden for first division club Djurgårdens IF in the capital, Stockholm, although in the same summer in the NHL Entry Draft in 1999 in the third round at the 96th place of the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League selected had been. Since Dallas offered him a new contract, however, the commitment with Linköping was broken and the attacker moved again to the United States.
His second attempt to gain a foothold in Dallas was much more successful. In Phoenix, he completed his last NHL season in the 2007/08 season, as he returned to his regular club Rögle BK in the summer of 2008, which had since been promoted to the Elitserien . A year later he signed another contract with his ex-club Djurgårdens IF. He remained loyal to this for three years and was once runner-up with the team. Then Tjärnqvist returned to Rögle. There he stayed even after relegation to HockeyAllsvenskan . For the 2014/15 season he moved within the league to the Malmö Redhawks , with whom the promotion to the elite class of Swedish ice hockey, renamed Svenska Hockeyligan , succeeded in the same year .
