Nicholas Griffin Petrecki (born July 11, 1989 in Schenectady , New York ) is an American ice hockey player . He is under contract with the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League and plays primarily for the Worcester Sharks in the American Hockey League on the position of defender .

Career

Petrecki was initially selected in the OHL Priority Selection Draft in the first round in eighth position by the Plymouth Whalers . However, he decided to start his career with the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League , where he went into his first season for the 2005/06 season. After a difficult rookie year with only three scorer points, he managed to post 24 points in the following season, eleven of them goals. In both seasons, the American managed to qualify for the playoffs with the Lancers. In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , the defender was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the first round in 28th position. Petrecki was considered the best physically trained player in his position of the entire year.

In the fall of 2007, the defender moved to Boston College , where he began his studies and at the same time was active with their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With this he reached the so-called "Frozen Four" tournament for the championship title, which the college secured with a 4-1 victory over the University of Notre Dame , in his rookie year . He had previously won the championship of the Hockey East division with the team and victory at the prestigious Beanpot Tournament , where he scored the winning goal in overtime in the final against Harvard University . In the following season, the American continued to run for college and delivered sovereign performances. However, the team was unable to defend any of the previous year's titles, which meant that the defender's season ended in March 2009. At the end of the month, the San Jose Sharks finally got him - almost two years after he was drafted - to sign his first professional contract, valid from the beginning of the 2009/10 season. In order to be able to use Petrecki beforehand, however, they engaged him at the end of April with a so-called amateur tryout offer and ordered him to join the Worcester Sharks farm team from the American Hockey League , which were in the playoffs at the time.
