Tyson Sexsmith (born March 19, 1989 in Priddis , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was under contract with HC Bolzano from the Italian A1 series during his active career between 2005 and 2013 .

Career

Sexsmith began his junior career in 2004 with the Olds Grizzlies, a team in the second-rate Canadian junior league Alberta Junior Hockey League . In his first season, the rookie completed 62 games for the team, but he could not prevent the season from finishing in last place in the South Division. At the end of the season, however, he received the team's internal rookie of the year award .

After the goalkeeper had already come to a four-minute short stint with the Medicine Hat Tigers and two games with the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League in the course of the 2004/05 season , he moved to Vancouver on the Canadian west coast in the summer for the following four years . He celebrated his first victory in the 2004/05 season when he played for the full 60 minutes in the WHL for the first time. He had another six wins in the following game year when he came as a so-called back-up to eleven missions. Sexsmith proved his potential with a solid goal against goal of 2.30. At the end of the season he celebrated with the Vancouver Giants winning the President's Cup , the championship trophy of the WHL.

For the following season, the young Canadian took over the regular post in the Giants' goal after a week-long duel with the previous starter Dustin Slade . Slade left the team after his resignation, with which Sexsmith took over the regular place. Even with him between the posts, the team reached first place in its division in the regular season . In the playoffs Vancouver - led by Milan Lucic - made it to the final again, but lost to the Medicine Hat Tigers 3: 4. Sexsmith posted a total of 14 shutouts over the entire season and improved his goalscoring average to 1.79 - with this value he also led the league. The season came to a conciliatory end when the Giants, as hosts of the season-closing Memorial Cup, won the prestigious title against the Medicine Hat tigers. Following this, Sexsmith was selected in the third round in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in 91st place by the San Jose Sharks .

Also in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 game years, the goalkeeper filled the post of regular goalkeeper with the Vancouver Giants. The title wins of previous years could not be repeated during this time. However, the Canadian continued to play at a high level and received an invitation to the Canadian national team's training camp for the U20 World Junior Championship in 2008 . The final nomination for the world title fights was missing. In the WHL, Sexsmith collected 16 shutouts in a further 141 WHL games including the playoffs between 2007 and 2009. With 26 shutouts in the regular season in the course of his junior career, he set a new record for the Western Hockey League. With his 22nd shutout on November 7, 2008, he surpassed previous record holders Bryan Bridges and Leland Irving . Furthermore, he was elected to the Second All-Star Team of the WHL in 2008 and had again led the league in the categories of goals against goals and shutouts.

After the San Jose Sharks had got him to sign a three-year contract on July 22, 2008, Sexsmith switched to the professional camp in the summer of 2009. Within the Sharks franchise , he was appointed to the farm team , the Worcester Sharks from the American Hockey League . There he formed the goalkeeper team with the American Alex Stalock , whose back-up he was , in the 2009/10 season . Despite fewer missions and the temporary transfer to the ECHL to collect match practice, Sexsmith achieved his first professional shutout in early February 2010 with a 3-0 win over the Lowell Devils . The goalkeeper spent two more years in Worcester.

After his expiring contract had not been extended, he moved to Metallurg Novokuznetsk from the Continental Hockey League for the 2012/13 season . After he had only completed four missions there by the end of January 2013, he moved to Italy, where he signed with HC Bozen from the A1 series . There he ended his active career after the season at the age of 24.
