Mark Aloysius Opoya Owuya (born July 18, 1989 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper with a Russian passport , who was most recently under contract with the KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) . His brother Sebastian Owuya is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Mark Owuya began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Djurgårdens IF , for whose professional team he was active from 2007 to 2011 in the Elitserien , the highest Swedish league. His greatest success with the team was the runner-up in the 2009/10 season . In 2010 he took part in the European Trophy with his team and was the goalkeeper with the best catch rate and the lowest average goal conceded of the tournament. In the 2010/11 season he had the best catch rate of all Elitserien goalkeepers in the main round with 92.7 percent, while his goalscoring average in his 32 appearances was 2.18 goals per game. In the playoffs, he was even able to increase his catch rate of 93.4 percent in his seven appearances and reduce his average against goals to 1.66 goals per game.

In April 2011 Owuya was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , for whose farm teams Toronto Marlies from the American Hockey League and Reading Royals from the ECHL he played until 2013. He was then without a club before he was signed by Luleå HF in December 2013 .

In February 2014, during a doping test, he entered the booth to give urine without an inspector and was then banned from the Swedish Sports Federation for a year, although the sample was negative. Owuya appealed the verdict and was acquitted in September 2014. Due to his suspension, his club, Luleå HF, had signed a replacement for Owuya, so that he was not used in the 2014/15 season. In addition, Owuya expressed the desire to switch to the Continental Hockey League . In November 2014 he received a trial contract with the KHL Medveščak Zagreb from that KHL and was signed a month later until the end of the season.

International

For Sweden Owuya took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2007 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2009 . At the U18 World Cup in 2007 he and his team won the bronze medal, at the U20 World Cup in 2009 the silver medal.
