Lewanika I.

Lewanika I. (* around 1842, † 1916 ; also known as Lubosi or Lewanika der Einiger) was the litunga (king) of Barotseland from 1878 to 1916 (with an interruption from 1884–1885 by Tatila Akufuna).

Lewanika agreed, following an agreement with Cecil Rhodes , that Barotseland would become a protectorate under the British South Africa Company (BSAC). Barotseland is now part of Zambia and came under the rule of Great Britain in 1890 . Later on, Lewanika felt cheated by the specific design of the agreement by the BSAC and complained unsuccessfully to the British Crown .

Lewanika had several sons, several of whom were successively his successors as Litunga von Barotseland : Yeta III. 1916–1945, Imwiko 1945–1948, Mbikusita = Lewanika II. (Fourth son): 1968–1977.

The name Lewanika became the family name of the descendants of Lewanika II, for example with his children, the Zambian politician Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika and the Zambian ambassador to the USA Inonge Mbikusita-Lewanika .
