Winnipeg Falcons

The Winnipeg Falcons were a Canadian Amateur - ice hockey team from Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba .

The team was founded in 1911 by players of Icelandic origin who, due to racial prejudice, could not play for other sports clubs in Winnipeg. In their first season they finished last in their league.

In the 1919/20 season, the Falcons won the Allan Cup and the Memorial Cup in 1921 , making them the best Canadian amateur team . The entire team was then sent to the Summer Olympics in Antwerp to take part as the Canadian national team in the first ever Olympic ice hockey tournament. After winning over Czechoslovakia (15: 0) in the quarter-finals, the USA (2: 0) in the semi-finals and Sweden (12: 1) in the final, the team won the gold medal. The members of the winning team were Robert Benson , Walter Byron , Frank Fredrickson , Chris Fridfinnson , Magnus Goodman , Haldor Halderson , Konrad Johannesson and Allan Woodman . Gordon Sigurjonson acted as trainer .

In honor of the first Canadian Olympic ice hockey champions, the men's national team wore redesigned Falcons jerseys at the opening game of the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the U20 juniors at the 2005 World Junior Championships . In 2006, the entire team were Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame ( dt . Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame ) was added.
