history

The Warroad Lakers were formed in November 1946. In their first season, the team played in the States-Dominion League , a league with teams from the region. The league championship was won in the first season. In the 1949/50 season, the newly built Warroad Memorial Arena was opened, which was used by the Lakers and the Warroad high school team. The following year, the Lakers changed league for the first time and competed in the Northwest Hockey League . In 1955 the first major title could be won, the team won the United States Intermediate Championship .

Several titles in different leagues followed. A high point was the win against the US Olympic team in January 1960, when the Lakers defeated the US selection 6-4. Later, the defeated US team with the Lakers players Bill and Roger Christian won the Olympic gold medal in Squaw Valley . In 1964 the Warroad Lakers became the first US team to win the Edmonton Journal Trophy , becoming Canadian Intermediate Champions . A year later they were in the West Final of the Allan Cup . In 1974 the Lakers became Canadian Intermediate Champions for the second time by winning the Hardy Cup . In 1984 David Christian , son of Bill Christian and former Lakers player, took part in the Olympic Games and won the gold medal with the US team . In the early 1990s, the Lakers moved to the Central Amateur Senior Hockey League . In 1993 the new ice hockey stadium, The Gardens , was completed. The following year, the Lakers first won the Allan Cup, the Canadian senior amateur championship. They were able to defend this title in the next two years, only in 1997 they had to admit defeat in the final. After the Lakers had problems finding a suitable league for a long time, the team management decided after the end of the Lakers' 50th season (1996/97) to stop playing.

Between 2001 and 2003 there was a successor team, the Warroad Islanders , but they quickly withdrew from gaming.
