Cal Marvin

Calvin C. Marvin (born April 29, 1924 in Warroad , Minnesota , † September 5, 2004 in Warroad, Minnesota) was an American ice hockey player , coach and manager. He was best known for his services to the amateur team Warroad Lakers . He was also a coach in 1958 and manager of the US national team in 1965 . He is a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .

Marvin grew up as the youngest son of five children in an entrepreneurial family in Warroad. He played ice hockey on the ponds in the region from an early age. After returning from the Marine Corps to Warroad after World War II, Marvin went to the University of North Dakota and was able to convince the sports director to build an ice hockey team, the Fighting Sioux . At the same time, he also helped found a new senior amateur hockey team, the Warroad Lakers, in his hometown of Warroad. During the week Marvin and his friends played for the UND, on the weekend they competed for the Lakers. After college, he returned to Warroad, where he played for the Lakers until 1955. He then succeeded Tut Marvin as a trainer. A year later he also became the team's manager. 1957/58 Marvin left his offices with the Lakers because he had been appointed as a coach for the US national team, which finished fifth at the World Cup in Oslo . In 1965 he worked as a manager of the US team.

Until 1997, Marvin worked in various positions as a trainer and above all as a manager for the Lakers. During its time the team has won numerous titles, the most important being the Allan Cup (1994, 95, 96), the Canadian Intermediate Championships (1964, 74) and the United States National Intermediate Championships (1955). Warroad was nicknamed " Hockeytown USA". Several Lakers players played for US national teams or in the NHL .

In 1982 Marvin was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, the University of North Dakota Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Warroad High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Marvin's granddaughter Gigi is also a hockey player and has won several world titles for the United States women's national ice hockey team .
