Hockeytown is a generic term used primarily in the United States and Canada . It is mainly used in major cities with a strong hockey tradition and famous teams. The following cities in particular are referred to as hockeytown :

Warroad , Minnesota is known as the oldest city, nicknamed "Hockeytown," for over 50 years. "Hockeytown" is also one of several nicknames for the city of Detroit , Michigan , where the successful Detroit Red Wings team from the National Hockey League play in the Joe Louis Arena . The term also became famous in connection with the brawl in Hockeytown .

On an international level, the term “Hockeytown” has established itself in the Norwegian city of Sarpsborg , home of the Sparta Warriors .

Farber's 2007 list focuses on Philadelphia , Buffalo , and Saint Paul , before Minnesota's St. Paul is declared the United States' new hockey town.

Binghamton , New York has been known as the "Hockey Town" since the mid-1970s. After a poor first year, the Broome Dusters grew in popularity and the arena was often sold out. Thanks to the team's rapid success, Binghamton was soon named "Hockeytown" by the leading ice hockey magazine The Hockey News . Nowadays, Binghamton is home to an American Hockey League team, the Binghamton Senators , who won their first Calder Cup in 2011 .
