The Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM, " Fire Safety Service of Montreal") is the fire department of Montreal in Canada . In addition to the city of Montreal, it is also responsible for 15 other municipalities in the administrative region of Montreal and has 65 bases. As in other North American cities, the emergency number is 911.

history

Construction workers founded the first volunteer fire department in 1734 . Towards the end of the 18th century, with the financial support of traders, so-called fire clubs were formed , which regularly practiced emergencies. From 1824, better organized Sociétés du Feu (fire societies ) took their place . In 1841 the city council elected the first permanently employed fire brigade commander to better coordinate the Sociétés. In 1863 there was a restructuring with the establishment of the municipal professional fire department . This was continuously expanded and modernized in the following decades. For example, the fire brigade had motor vehicles from 1912.

In 2002, 27 municipalities merged with Montreal and the 22 local fire departments were merged with the Montreal Fire Department, which then took on its current name. Even after fifteen parishes split off again in 2006, the enlarged fire brigade continued to exist.
