Simone Gonin (born August 23, 1989 in Savigliano ) is an Italian curler . He currently plays as a lead in Joël Retornaz's team .

Career

Gonin first played internationally in the European Junior Challenge 2006, the then qualifying tournament for the Junior World Championship . As a substitute in Giorgio da Rin's team, he won the competition and took part in the 2006 Junior World Championship , where the Italian team came in tenth. With further participation in the European Junior Challenge 2010 and 2011 he could not qualify for the world championship.

He played his first European Championship in 2012 with Fabio Sola as Skip; the team took 15th place. In the same year he played at the Mixed Doubles World Championship ; together with Lucrezia Salvai he came in twelfth place. This was followed by a ninth place at the Mixed Doubles World Championship 2015 (with Lucrezia Salvai) and another twelfth place in 2017 (with Veronica Zappone ).

At the European Championship 2017 he played as a substitute in the team of Joël Retornaz and finished eighth. The Italian team qualified for the 2017 World Cup , in which Gonin was again a substitute. The team finished ninth.

At the  qualifying tournament  for the  2018 Olympic Winter Games  , he played second in the team led by Retornaz and secured one of the two remaining starting places for himself and the Italian team (skip: Joël Retornaz, third:  Amos Mosaner , lead:  Daniele Ferrazza , replacement:  Andrea Pilzer ) for the men's Olympic tournament. In Pyeongchang he came ninth with the Italian team after three wins and six losses in the Round Robin .

At the 2018 European Championships in Tallinn , he played under Retornaz in the position of lead and won the bronze medal with the Italian team.
