The Chisana River is the 169 km long right source river of the Tanana River in the Interior of Alaska .
It rises from the Chisana Glacier in Wrangell-St.-Elias National Park , flows 97 km in a north-northeast, then 72 km in a northwest direction and forms at Northway in the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge , 66 km southeast of Tok , at the confluence with the Nabesna River the Tanana River. The Chisana River is part of the river system of the Yukon River . Its lower course runs parallel to the Alaska Highway .
The name is derived from "Ches-tna", an aboriginal name for the river, which means something like "red river".
