The Nabesna River is the 118 km long left headwaters of the Tanana River east of the Mentasta Mountains in the Interior of Alaska .
It rises from the Nabesna Glacier in Wrangell-St.-Elias National Park , flows north-northeast through the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge and forms the Tanana River at Northway , 66 km southeast of Tok , at the confluence with the Chisana River. The Nabesna River is part of the river system of the Yukon River .
The river was named in 1898 by WJ Peters and AH Brooks of the United States Geological Survey based on the name of the indigenous people for the upper reaches of the Tanana.
